Have you noticed lately that you’ve been wanting to change an area of your life but you haven’t been able to muster the motivation to move forward?
Perhaps you have been thinking about what could be different or better in your life. But then you let indecision and worry take over and let it rob you of enjoying life in the present. You might have found a hobby that seems exciting to pursue, only to talk yourself out of it.
These are all examples of what “stuckness” looks like.
When it comes to being stuck, you’re not alone. It’s not unusual to feel stuck in life or at work. It’s a nearly universal human experience to feel stuck at some point in your life.
It’s important to remember, however, that you have the power to break free from this state and create positive change.
In this article, we will explore what steps you can take to become unstuck and regain a sense of purpose again, as well as find new opportunities for growth and move forward with confidence.
5 Ways to Become Unstuck
There are many ways you can free yourself from being mentally and emotionally stuck. Below are eight tools you can use that can enable you to break free from feeling stuck and start living your best life.
1) Identify What You Really Want
Feeling stuck tends to be the feeling of something in your life not being right. When you observe those feelings, take some time to identify what you want to be different.
Think about how you want your desires and hopes to look and how you want them to come about from a positive perspective. For example, “I want to build my retirement fund” rather than “I don’t want to dip into my retirement fund prematurely.”
Ways to Identify What You Want
- Create a vision board — Be creative and put together a visual of what is important to you and what you want in your life. This board can be as detailed or general as you prefer. It is your vision. Have a good time with it.
- Determine what your values are — What is important to you? Do you place a high value on relationships, integrity, or work? Do a Google search on “values.” Use that information to make a list of five values. Read that list every morning. Make choices each day that reflect those values.
2) Change Your Perspective
Keep in mind that feeling stuck can simply be a mindset – although an oppressive one. But negative thoughts don’t have to control your behavior or thinking.
Here are some questions to change your perspective:
❖ How will I feel about this situation in a week/two months/two years?
❖ What positive outcome could come from this circumstance?
❖ What would I say to encourage someone else if they were experiencing this situation? Then apply my own advice.
3) Step Out of Your Comfort Zone
Feeling stuck typically comes from staying within your comfort zone for too long. To break free, you need to be willing to step outside of what is familiar and try new experiences. Take some risks and try things that excite you but that you’ve hesitated to do in the past. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes and experience some failure along the way, as these can be some of the best learning opportunities.
Also, don’t be afraid to ask for help. Find a mentor or coach who can encourage and guide you. They can help keep you motivated and provide support and advice on how to move forward.
Pushing your boundaries can lead to personal growth and the discovery of hidden talents or passions. It’s important to remember that growth takes place outside of your comfort zone. And remember, be patient with yourself. Change and growth don’t happen overnight, so take your time and remember to celebrate your successes along the way.
4) Choose Self-Love
There is no better way to invest in yourself than by practicing self-love. Practicing self-love looks like self-compassion and self-care. It can help replenish your energy and motivation. Self-care plays an important role in breaking free from feeling stuck. You need to take care of your mental, physical, and emotional well-being. Schedule time in your week to do things that bring you joy and recharge your energy. Treat that time like you would a commitment or appointment that you wouldn’t be willing to cancel. A commitment to do something that takes care of you is just as, if not more, important than a commitment to someone else.
5) Seek Inspiration and Support
When you’re feeling stuck, that is the perfect time to seek out inspiration and surround yourself with positive influences. Find stories of people who have overcome difficulties similar to yours or achieved extraordinary success in their lives or professions.
Listen to podcasts, read books, or attend seminars that provide you with motivation and insights. Spend time with other people who have what you want in your life. Keep in mind that we become like the people we spend the most time with.
