Introduction
Life can be a bit like a rollercoaster, with its ups and downs, successes and setbacks. As a life coach, I’ve had the privilege of helping many individuals navigate the twists and turns of their life’s path. One theme I’ve observed is that rather than focusing on what we did well each day, our “default” setting is often fixating on things we did wrong or should have done and didn’t. Our thoughts have an incredible impact on our overall well-being and success. In this article, we’ll talk about a mindset shift that can be a powerful catalyst for a happier and more fulfilling life.
The Power of Your Thoughts
Our thoughts affect our emotions, decisions, and actions. When we consistently focus on our shortcomings or what could have been improved – fear, worry, anxiety, depression, and low self-esteem are the results. Choosing (it is a choice) to focus on the things you did well, even if they seem small, can positively impact how you think of and feel about yourself.
Boosting Self-Esteem
One of the most immediate benefits of daily acknowledgment of the things you did well is the boost it gives to your self-esteem. When you focus on your accomplishments, no matter how small they may seem, it shifts how you think about yourself. This encouragement helps you develop greater confidence in your abilities, can help motivate you, and sets the stage for even more success in the future.
Enhancing Resilience
Life is filled with challenges, and no one is immune to making mistakes or occasional failures. However, when you choose to focus on your successes, you become more resilient in the face of adversity. You start viewing setbacks as temporary and as opportunities for growth rather than obstacles.
How To Shift Your Focus
Many years ago, my Life Coach gave me an assignment. It had a significant impact on how I viewed myself and how I felt about myself. Every night before I went to sleep, I wrote a list of everything I did well that day. When I started this practice, my list was short and had things on it like brushing my teeth, taking a shower, and getting to work on time because I was so used to focusing on the negative that it was hard for me to think of anything positive I had done. As I continued to do this practice, I was able to recognize things I was doing well that I had been unable to see before.
I encourage you to do this practice, preferably before you go to sleep. Use a journal or a bound notebook and set it on your nightstand to help you remember to do this every night. Test it out for two weeks. What have you got to lose?
Conclusion
Your thought life is a powerful force that can shape your reality. By choosing to focus on what you did well today, you can boost your self-esteem, encourage personal growth, and cultivate resilience. This shift in mindset can lead to a happier, more fulfilling life and a positive outlook with hope for the future. So, remember to acknowledge the daily things you do well, no matter how small they may seem, and watch how your life transforms for the better.
